Kirk Whalum, Freddy Cole Headline Knoxville Jazz Festival, March 4-7, 2009
Details for the 4th annual Knoxville Jazz Festival are falling into place with Freddy Cole and Kirk Whalum as two of the artists performing.
Freddy Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat “King” Cole. Like his brother, he plays piano and sings with a guitar and trio. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even and he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. He is among the most respected singers in jazz with vocals that are suave, elegant and formidable. An evvening with Freddy Cole will be one of the best musical experiences of your life.
Kirk Whalum is one of the most popular saxophone players on the Contempoarary Jazz scene, drawing on his Memphis R&B, gospel and blues roots to create a sound that is expressive and soulful yet accessible. His 1998 CD, For You, spent two years at the top of the Billboard Contemporary Jazz charts.
